Are there dry Muscatel wines?

Yes, there are dry muscatel wines, which are usually called by the French name of the variety: Muscat.

In Catalonia if a wine called is called Moscatell it is usually sweet, and if it is called Muscat it is dry. In the Penedès there are several wineries that produce Muscats.

In fact, Muscat itself is a grape variety like any other, and therefore can be made into wines of all kinds. What happens is that their characteristic aromas, very fruity and musky, make it ideal for making sweet wine, particularly considering its good maturity and ability to generate high sugar content.

There are two main varieties of muscat grapes: the Roman or Alexandria, which is native to Catalonia, and the small grain or Frontignan Muscat.
