Recent studies have shown that the first vineyard in Catalonia was in the Penedès, and dates from the 7th century B.C.
An archaeological dig started some years ago has now brought this to light.
The key evidence is the finding of some 400 grape seeds of two different (as yet unidentified) varieties.
These are the remains of the oldest grapes farmed in Catalonia.
The discovery was made on the Font de la Canya hill in Avinyonet del Penedès.
Over 400 stores have been documented, indicating that this area was probably an economic centre where wine and cereals were produced and distributed.
